I’ve Retired: Now What?

Retirement is something many people look forward to. No more early alarms or meetings, no more performance reviews or office politics. Just a time for you to relax and enjoy yourself after decades of hard work. And you’ve earned it. But now that you’ve retired and have all that time on your hands, what should you do? It’s time to take care of yourself—and your finances.

Sit down and think

Take some time—either early in your retirement or before it even starts—and consider what you want your retirement to look like. Do you want to travel the world? Sell everything and bounce around the country in a deluxe RV? Go back to school and earn that Master’s degree you never got a chance to start before? Open a restaurant or bed-and-breakfast? Or maybe you just want to live simply and enjoy whatever life throws your way. Whatever you want to do, however impossible it may seem, write it down to make it official and real. List everything that you might even consider wanting to do with your retirement years.

Ask your friends, family members, and former coworkers if they have any suggestions for how you could spend your retirement. They may have some unusual suggestions based on their own experiences, or things they’ve heard about from others, that might be right up your alley.

Make the most of your time

Now that you have at least a rough idea of what you want to do with your retirement—go do it! Once you’ve retired, there’s nothing holding you back. Go plan that vacation, start pricing the best motorhomes, make a list of all the little-known tourist attractions you want to visit and get started. This is your time, and you deserve to enjoy it.
